Although pool parties may not be in the immediate future, if you own a swimming pool, this year it may see more use than ever before. For the Do-it-Yourselfer, here’s how to open your pool in 7 easy steps.

  1. Drain pool cover, remove, clean and store.
  2. Add water to pool, if needed.
  3. Turn equipment on and test to make sure everything’s operating properly.
  4. Test pool chemistry.
  5. Brush and vacuum pool.
  6. Shock the pool and apply algaecide, if it’s a chlorine pool.
  7. Perform a safety check and evaluate pool equipment to determine if any parts need replacing.

Don’t feel confident to open your pool on your own?  – I don’t blame you!
We use Beechmount Pools for our opening, closing and maintenance. Give them a call at 519-743-0484. They offer curbside pick-up of products, and have a Pool Opening Special when you prepay.

With the pool cleaned, it’s time to freshen up the plantings. Because of our climate, consider tropical plants in containers that can be moved indoors when pool season comes to an end. Here are some tropicals that are sure to brighten your poolside area.

  • Palms, such as Robellini or Majesty
  • Hibiscus
  • Mandevilla
  • Ixora
  • Bougainvillea
  • Croton
